What About These Dreams....Lovecraft and Dreamland

Shattered Dreamers is a project that explores a different version of the Dreamland first created by Howard Philip Lovecraft in a collection of short stores and one novel, whose title is The Dream Quest of the Unknown Kaddath.

My first attempt at presenting this adventure and this world was in the book Through the Gate of Dreams.

It was begun in 1985 and first self-published in 2002.  It is now undergoing a series revision.

I have always been fascinated by dreams and how and why they come about; what they are and what they mean.  I’ve had a few interesting Lucid Dreams in my life which has added to my interest in them.

Lovecraft creates a world of rich fantastic and phantasm, with his usual purple prose.  Many have since been inspired to explore this world in other fantasy stories and novels.  The works of Gary Myers and Brian Lumley were two early explorers in this fictional realm.

But, though Lovecraft and Myers were inspiring they were lacking something, and Lumley just quickly side stepped the whole issue.

What is that you ask?  Why the fact, as so eloquently expressed in the song ‘These Dreams’ by the rock group Heart,  the heart of the matter is that we do live two lives.  One when we are awake, usually by the light of day, and the other life and world that we live when darkness covers us.  We sleep and we thus dream.  The idea that we have one foot in the waking world and another foot in the land of dreams – that is what excites me and what is being explored in this book.

Most fantasy authors completely ignore this duality.  The crux of the interesting thing about us humans and the fact that we dream.

What if those dreams took over?  What if we let them become the focus of our life and concern, what impact would that and could that have on our life.  This is what I am excited to explore.  This is what is happening to Lamont and Basha.

I hope you are interested and come join me, and them, in exploring this world of the fantastic and the dangerous – the realm of Dreams.
